Local Brain Surgeon Suspended

For many of us the most daunting medical intervention we could imagine would be brain surgery. We hold brain surgeons with particularly high regard for their skill and painstaking care.

Such surgery often carries unavoidable risks of life changing outcomes which is why the level of trust in brain surgeons is so high. Many who have had to go through the ordeal personally or with close family have had that trust shaken recently by the troubling criticism of operations carried out by Coventry-based Consultant Neurosurgeon Hussien El-Maghraby. One expert described Mr El-Maghraby's work as "rough surgery" and was "appalled" by video footage of two of his operations from which the patients tragically never recovered and died soon after. The University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust suspended Mr El-Maghraby from performing two specific types of surgery until he had completed further training and mentorship.

These issues were highlighted on the BBC Inside Out television programme broadcast on 12 March and in local and national news reports.

There are risks with all types of surgery but there should never be any reason to doubt that the surgery will be carried out to a proper standard. Sadly, that does not appear to have been the case in these recently reported cases and families will have been left devastated as a result.
