The easiest resolution you can make this year – and keep…

2024 is all about taking care of yourself. Whilst it may seem great to set New Year's resolutions to eat no sugar and reach 10,000 steps a day, some days these goals may simply be unachievable – and that’s ok! We’re all human and allowed a treat or a slower, more relaxing day sometimes, and for that we should not be hard on ourselves!

So, what resolution can you make instead, that will be easier to keep, whilst ensuring you are looking after yourself and your loved ones, not only this year, but far into the future?

Ensuring your financial affairs are in order will ensure you and your family are prepared for whatever the future may hold. Doing this is easier than you think (with a little help from our team), and you can start by making a Will and setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney.

A Will is the only way to make sure that your money, personal belongings and property go to the people and causes that you care about.  It can also help to avoid your hard-earned wealth ending up in the hands of someone you did not intend.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to make arrangements for the future if a time came when you needed someone to look after your financial affairs and/or make decisions in relation to your health and welfare on your behalf.

Our ‘What happens if I die without making a Will’ flowchart shows how your estate would be distributed if a Will were not in place – something which can have unfair and unintended consequences.  You could especially be affected if you cohabit, as, according to UK law, common law marriage doesn’t exist.

Many people associate Wills and LPAs with older people, but they should really be considered while you are mentally fit and well, so you are able to choose people you trust to look after your welfare and finances, protecting family wealth for future generations – whether you have bought a house and starting a family in your 20’s, or are later on in life with grown up children, having a Will in place will ensure your loved ones are looked after, should something happen to you unexpectedly.

Therefore, making a Will and putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place is a New Year’s resolution that is easy to keep & one that will be beneficial in future – and don’t forget, you can update your Will at any time should your circumstances change!
